FITZPATRICT, Benjamin (1802-1869) an American politician, who served as the 11th Governor of the U.S. state of Alabama and as United States Senator from Alabama as a Democrat; In 1860, Fitzpatrick was nominated for vice president of the United States by the wing of the Democratic Party that had nominated Stephen A. Douglas of Illinois for President, but refused the nomination, and ultimately Herschel V. Johnson of Georgia was nominated in his stead. Fitzpatrick withdrew from the Senate on January 21, 1861, following the secession of his home state. Autograph Letter Signed, “Ben Fitzpatrict,” Wetumpka, Alabama, October, 23, 1866, 4pp., fine. In small part, “What sad changes have come over the country since that period. It seems to me like a dream, and yet the startling reality stares in the face. Still I do not despond under the reverses that have overtaken us, and but for the dark future, would set about with youthful ardor to rebuild my fortunes. ..What is to be our fate if the Radicals obtain control of the Government as it seems they are doing! We must bide our time and trust in Providence. ... A majority of my servants are still working with me and work very well and I am making a fair crop ... The remaninder of my servants who left me, like the Israelites of old, are not longing for the flesh-pots of Egypt, their onions, their leeks and squashes. They all have seen me and desire to return to their old home. ... ”
