About VG.The 9th Cavalry, 'Buffalo Soldiers', were comprised of Negro soldiers, many of whom fought against the Confederacy and slavery during the Civil War. They served manly in controlling the hostile Indians on the Great Plains between 1870-1890s. The regiments, commanded by white officers and operating under intense disadvantages - difficulty obtaining officers; prejudicial treatment by higher army officials concerning equipment, assignments, and camp policy; and prejudice in frontier towns- nevertheless developed into remarkable fighting units during their extensive engagements on the Southern Plains. Called all sorts of names - by various groups, the men of the 9th and the more famous 10th cavalry were dubbed "buffalo soldiers" by their Indian opponents. They were proud of this title, and the most prominent feature of the 10th Cavalry's regimental crest was the figure of a buffalo.
