The collected papers of Captain James H. Chancy, Salem, Massachusetts, 1839-1862. Included are (16) receipts for food, supplies and medicines, four (4) business letters, and documentation pertaining to an 1861 voyage to Elmina, West Africa (present-day Ghana) by the bark "Manchester." Here Chancy sailed as a passenger to the Gold Coast, serving as an agent for the ship's owners. Included is a detailed letter of instruction to Captain Gilman and Sailing Master Webber as well as "Settlement of Voyage in Bark 'Manchester' to West Africa. G. E. Webber master. 1861." This accounting details cargos, consignors and sales figures. Overall the group in very good condition or better.
