Partially printed document on vellum signed "Franklin Pierce" and "Jefferson Davis," one page, 13 ½" x 17 ¼", Washington, D.C., January 10, 1855, naming John M. Brannan a captain in the 1st Regiment of Artillery. John Milton Brannan, a West Pointer and Mexican War veteran, was artillery chief for the Army of the Cumberland between 1863 and 1865, reaching the rank of brevet major general. Diagonal 2" central split, wear at folds, signatures bold. Overall very good condition.
