Established in 1835, Beckely Mill operated as a grist mill along Piney Creek in West Virginia and over the years fell into disrepair. With the advent of war, the Confederate government sought to help upgrade the old mill for their use. A very historic Confederate war-date document, 1p. oblong 4to., being a repair agreement for Beckley Mill, reading, in part: "…agreement entered into…twenty eight day of October 1861 between Gen. Jn. B. Floyd C. S. A. commanding the army of the Kanawha and Thomas I. Teaford of Fayette Co. Va., that for…the sum of five hundred and ninety eight dollars…for repairs to Beckley's Mill in Raleigh Co…Teaford is to procure from Alfred Beckley owner of said mill a deed of trust on…mill from said Beckley to the Confederate States of America…according to law…".
