On December 16, 1861 the Mississippi Legislature passed "An Act To Create A Fund For The Support Of Destitute Families Of Volunteers In This State, And For Other Purposes." A record of Mississippi's volunteers was essential should such charitable relief efforts ever be implemented. As such, muster rolls were collected from each county's Board of Police and submitted to the Auditor of Public Accounts in Jackson. The nineteen original Confederate rolls presented here date from early 1862 into early 1863. These documents, which generally exhibit fine penmanship on either blue and/or white paper, bear the appropriate endorsements and seals of officialdom.
