One of the first Confederate strongholds to fall on the upper Mississippi River was Island No. 10. Beginning in February until April, when the Island fell, numerous engagements occurred as the Union fleet descended the river towards Island No. 10. On March 17, 1862, Union Admiral Foote attacked Battery No. 1 near New Madrid, Missouri. Fighting was intense as the following document will attest by honoring the actions of one lone signalman who risked his life to send his messages through. Presented here is a great war-date Confederate, 1p. 4to., manuscript General Orders, issued by A. A. General Thomas Jordan for General P. T. G. Beauregard, "Headquarters Army of the Mississippi, Corinth, Miss., April 12, 1862." "The commander of the forces desire to call the especial attention of the army to the intrepid behavior of of Private Elain Jones Co. K, 17th Regt. Virginia Vols. while on detached service in the Signal Corps during the bombardment of the upper…battery at Madrid Bend, the signal flag having been twice shot from his hands…recovered by him…his messages accurately transmitted without intermission, preferring the post of danger and of duty…Priv[ate Jo]nes remained at his perilous position for six days and nights affording an example of patriotic devotion and personal valor…worthy of the emulation of his young countrymen in arms…". Signed and made official by P. Ellis, Jr. aag. Negligible paper loss, else VG.
