War-date Confederate soldier's letter by a "J. A. Henderson," 2pp., 4to, with cover bearing Tudor Hall (Manassas), VA CDS and DUE 10 handstamp, Davis Ford, Virginia, January 10, 1862, to his sister, "Malissa," in Belmont, Alabama, reading, in part,"…The health of the company is very good now there are some few cases of the mumps…We are now in winter quarters about five miles south east of Manassas at Davis Ford. We are very well fixt-up for the winter and I hope we may remain here til our time expires…Wm. is now elected corporal…the news came to camp today that Jesse Wimberly was dead - he belonged to the Sumter Mounted Guards…It is growing late and for the want of something to write I am compelled to close…". Numerous "J. A. Hendersons" served Alabama, making a positive ID of this soldier very difficult. Very good condition.
