A good Union soldier’s letter by Henry G. Heffron, 1st Lt. 79th New York Highlanders, mustered in on 5/13/1861, POW, exchanged 9/21/1862. This 4p. folio letter, Beaufort, South Carolina, January 12, 1862, VG. The writer quotes several conversion exchanges between the opposing Sentries. In part: “...while the Sentrys were talking across the ferry secesh invited one of our boys to call over on New Years. Our Sentry replied that he would try and perhaps might stay all night, and as you are probably aware he did go over and also staid all night; but he took so many friends with him that Secesh - thinking I presume that he could not accomodate them all - left for help. Before he returned we, being of course very much offended at the manner in which we had been used, put fire to his house, destroyed his fortifications, took his cannon, and used his half of the Ferry and his Ferry boat as though it were our own property. And if I’m not mistaken we have neglected to return the boat, and for some unexplained purpose have arranged it so that he cannot safely occupy even his own half of the Ferry...I have the charge of the hospital in all its departments and instruct the attendants in whatever I want done...When I wrote you last I was Act’g Assistant Surgeon...Since then the Surgeon has procured a friend of his to fill that and I am as when I came Hospital Steward...” More.
