Small archive pertaining to Thomas Hill Watts, the Confederate Attorney General who resigned in 1863 to become Alabama's governor. Included are the following: Autograph letter signed "T. H. Watts," 2pp., 8vo, the first page on a Confederate Justice Department letterhead, Richmond, Virginia, September 8, 1863, to President Jefferson Davis, Richmond, reading, in part: "…The people of Alabama, by an almost unanimous voice, through the ballot box, have elected me to the chief magistracy of that state. This action of the people of my native state, though with my expressed consent, has been wrought without any seeking of mine. I cannot retire from the office of Attorney General, without expressing my appreciation of the uniform courtesy and kindness you have shown me...I shall retire from your Cabinet with increased admiration for your great ability, exalted worth and fervent patriotism…" This, a signed true copy, consists of two pages, each tipped to a modern mount. Stains and marginal loss to the first page…plus; Autograph Note Signed "T. H. Watts," one page, 8 ½" x 4", Montgomery, Alabama, September 24, 1864, to Col. W. R. Pickett, A.Q.M., reading "Let W. C. Allen have one gallon of whiskey, for medicinal purposes, on the usual terms." Very good condition…plus; Autograph Letter Signed, Jefferson Davis," one page, on Confederate Executive Department letterhead, October 12, 1862, Richmond, Virginia, to T. H. Watts, Richmond, reading, in part: "…With this I send to you a bill which seems to me objectionable on grounds of private rights and constitutional powers…Please examine the bill and prepare a paper either to remove my doubts or to set forth the legal and constitutional objections, as I must sign the bill or return it tomorrow morning…" Soiling, small splits along folds…plus; Autograph Letter Signed "Jeff. Davis," one page, small 8vo, n.p. October 3, 1863, to "Atty. Genl," the President here says the Postmaster General is seeking an opinion. Soiling, overall browning…plus; three pieces of war-date Alabama currency, being denominated $1, 50¢ and 25¢, each with loss…plus: late 19th - early 20th century transcript of an 18th century Virginia land bond of £50 payable to Governor Patrick Henry. Very good condition.
