A good Confederate soldier's war-date letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Ambrose M. Hite, Co. H (Page Grays), 33rd Virginia Infantry [POW Spotsylvania May 12, 1864], "Camp near Culpepper, C. H., Va., Oct. 20, 1863", in part: "…our brigade did not get into know engagement on this trip. A. P. Hill fought them some. Our division got in five miles of Manassas. The Yankees would not stand…we tore up the railroad from Manassas to the Rappahanock river. We are 7 miles from Culpepper…I don't think the Yankees will pester us this winter any more. We taken a good many prisoners this trip. I do not like the country around Manassas…on account of water…it is reported…that A. P. Hill's Corps is going to Tennessee…Ewell's corps will be left here…Old Gen. Meade will be superseded…as he did not fight us. Gen. Stuart's cavalry is gone over in[to] the valley to tear up the Baltimore & Ohio railroad…my old hat is nearly worn out. Send me a box of provisions…send me some Confederate coffee…". Near fine.
