A good Confederate soldier's war-date battle letter, 4pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Ambrose M. Hite, Co. H (Page Grays), 33rd Virginia Infantry [POW Spotsylvania May 12, 1864], "Camp Stonewall Brigade, Orange Co., Va., Dec. 5, 1863", in part: "…we are now stationed at our old camp fifteen miles below Orange C. H. I will give you the particulars of our fight which occurred on the 27th of Nov…the Yankees tried to cross the river at Raccoon ford but our men kept them back and then they started down the river…and crossed…one the 27th our train was ordered to…Locus Grove…near Mine Run…we heard cannonading in our front…the Yankees attacked our division in the rear. We halted…and sent out skirmishers. The skirmishers commenced firing very rapidly…a line of battle was soon formed and then we was ordered forward. We…started with a yell down through the woods…we drove the Yankys twice from their position. We quit fighting after dark…the Yankys lost killed & wounded…one thousand. Our loss…four hundred & fifty. I felt in a dead Yanky's haversack (while we were fighting) to see what he had. He had crackers. On the 28th, 29th, 30th we laid in a line of battle. We built strong fortifications near Mine Run…the Yankys was afraid to attack…on the night of the 30th the Yankys fell back…their was only one man wounded in our company…Bushrod Oden was wounded by a shell on the 29th…I do not think old Meade will pester us any more this winter…we have eight boys in the guard house…Rothgeb come to us on the 30th…he still says he can not stand it. I think he can stand it…if he tries…". VG to near fine.
