A good Confederate soldier's war-date letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Ambrose M. Hite, Co. H (Page Grays), 33rd Virginia Infantry [POW Spotsylvania May 12, 1864], "Camp Stonewall Brigade, Orange Co., Va., Jan. 3, 1864", in part: "…our mess has a tent to stay in. We have a chimney in our tent, the rest of the boys in our company have built huts…our brigade was on picket at Chrismast. Our regiment was on the out-post…I and six others & the captain was on one post together. After we was on post about fifteen minutes there was a Yanky come to the river & we exchanged papers with them . We thrower the paper across…with a rock. The first paper that the Yanky tried to throw across fell about middle ways of the river…the boys told the Yanky to take off his overcoat or els he would not get that one across, so he taken off his overcoat & threw it then went back…our post was in sight of the Yanky's post…they were a going to take the men from sixteen to fifty five & put them in service …if they bring all the men in to service that belongs to the army they will do well…you also stated…that Papa had not got me any overcoat yet. I would like to have one if he can get one without much trouble. Probably he can get an old Yanky over-coat somewhere that will do. The one that I drew is most too good to wear in the army or else I would have kept it here…". The original transmittal cover is also included. Both VG.
