IMBODEN, John Daniel (1823-1895) Confederate general, commanded the famous “Imboden Raid” into Northwester Virginia, severing the B&O Railroad. Saved the trains of the Confederate retreat from Gettysburg. Autograph Letter Signed, “J.D. Imboden” Hd. Qtrs, Val. Dist., June 2nd, 1864, 2pp., light blue lined paper, previous folds, VG. The letter is written to Col. Kenton Harper (a Virginia legislator, and CSA Colonel), in part, “...A messenger from Major Gilmore has just arrived. On the 29th May below Newton, he attacked & captured a train of 25 wagons with supplies which he destroyed, whipped the guard of 150 Cav., captured 33 prisoners & 60 horses which he has all safe in the mountains. He captured Hunter’s mail with several important dispatches & N.Y. & Balt. papers as late as May 28th. ... Gilmore reports Hunter as having issued a proclamation that he will burn a house for every wagon he loses or for every attack made upon him. New Town is reported burnt under this proclamation. If so, might I not hang a Yankee for every house burnt? I shall set aside a batch of hostages.”
