Small archive of 4 items pertaining to Sergeant Frederick A. Ober, Co. "A", 5th Louisiana Infantry, C.S.A. When the 5th Louisiana was formed in May, 1861 it boasted 744 men on its rolls. The came the Seven Days Battles, Sharpsburg, Chancelorsville, Gettysburg and the rest. Given the regiment's consistently high casualty rate, only 19 soldiers of the 5th Louisiana could be mustered for the surrender at Appomattox on April 9, 1865. Among these fortunates was Sergeant Ober. His surviving effects consist of the following items: Manuscript document, 4 1/2" x 8", one page, April 11, 1865, Appomattox, Virginia. This exceptional parole reads: "F.H. Ober, Sergeant Co A 5th La Regt C.S.A is hereby paroled as a prisoner of war in accord in account with terms entered into between Entered into between General U.S. Grant U.S.A and Gen'l R.E. Lee C.S.A.". The odd doubling of "entered into appears on the original. The blue paper on which this is written was taken from a Confederate document in that the verso bears a penciled list entitled "Casualties of La. Brigade in 5,6,7 Feby 1865". Folds, aging and minor paper loss to one corner. Good condition...Plus; Partially printed document, one page, 4 1/2" x 6 3/4", May 23, 1865, Montgomery, Alabama. Here, on a Provost Marshall's pass, Ober is given permission to proceed home as a "Paroled Prisoner". Good condition...Plus; CDV of Ober, no backmark. This early war image shows Ober in an immaculate uniform complete with gray kepi. Inscribed in red pen below the portrait is: Fred A. Ober Co. A 5 Regt La Vol - May 4/ 1861". Below is another line now illegible. VG condition...Plus; CDV identified as Mrs. Fred Ober, Lillenthal backmark, New Orleans. Given the U.S. Revenue stamp on the verso, this photograph dates to after the fall of New Orleans. VG condition.
