A great postwar Confederate veteran's letter, 5pp. 8vo., written by Lt. Col. RICHARD OWEN WHITEHEAD (1830-1911), formerly of the 16th Virginia Vols., U. S. Mint, San Francisco, March 25, 1889 to Bvt. Major General Henry G. Thomas (1837-1897) in part: "I have been very much disappointed in not being able to meet you during your stay in San Francisco…[I] received the 'invitation of 21 years ago' by the officers of the Union Army whom I met under flag of truce in front of the Crater…an apology is due for not responding to that…[and] in answer to your inquiries concerning Col. Rogers…of Gov. Cameron's staff with whom I was associated in Mahone's Old Brigade and Gen. Wm. Terry, my former school mate at the Va. Mil. Institute, whom you met while Provost Marshall in West Va…I still have your letter and prize it as the best aftermath of the war…". Near fine.
