TAPPAN, Mason Weare (1817-1886) congressman from New Hampshire (1855-1861), served in the Union Army as colonel of the First Regiment, New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry. Autograph Letter Signed “W.M. Tappan,” Washington, January 2, 1861, 4pp., with original free-frank cover, both VG. In part, “I never went to bed last night till broad day light. ... the times are perilous here and that we are, or may be in danger, before any succor could reach us from the free states.Members of the cabinet & Gen Scott are in possesion of innformation in regard to a secret movement upon the capital & wiping out the Northern members. Every effort is being made to precipitate Maryland and Virginia into the revolution with the view of seizing upon Washington and holding it against the US government. ... The traitors are being driven from the Cabinet ... But true men in the Cabinet have as much as they can do to keep old Buck from taking the consul of his fears & his natural southern instincts & thus giving everything up to the traitors. ... A guard is kept around the President’s house ....”
