Booklet, "CORRESPONDENCE Relative to the Case of MESSRS. MASON AND SLIDELL," provides the diplomatic letter exchanges between America and England resolving the Trent Affair. Captain Charles Wilkes, U.S. N., commanding the United States sloop-of-war San Jacinto, had illegally boarded the British merchant vessel, The Trent, in search of Mason and Slidell who were appointed diplomatic agents by the Confederate government and in route to England to negotiate treaties with England and France. The skillful diplomacy documented in this booklet and orchestrated by Lincoln, served to avoid what well could have been the incident that brought England into the war in support of the Confederate government. First edition, stitched, printed paper wraps (edge chipped), 16pp, np, nd (1861)very good.
