A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 2 1/4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Ezra Greene, Co. H, 2nd Rhode Island Vols., on patriotic stationery, "Camp Sprague, [Washington], July 2, 1861", in part: "…we are all longing for a action. The first battery…left here yesterday…I went to the city…George went with me to show me the big buildings and the way…we went…all over the capitol…then to the Smithsonian Institute where we saw all kinds of birds and animals…the to the Washington monument, which will be failure on account of the great weight of stone which is crushing the foundation…Professor Sweet will walk the rope here 4th of July…".
