A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Ezra Greene, Co. H, 2nd Rhode Island Vols.,"Camp Slocum, [Washington], Aug. 15, 1861", in part: "…we are not in Virginia. We are in a prison…we are camped about 3 miles south of our old quarters…if we leave…we are liable to be taken by the pickets…there was several of our men taken and brought to camp by the pickets…we were on picket…about 3 rods apart…had to keep awake all night or the officers would steal our guns. 3 or 4 of our boys lost their guns…there is an attack expected on the city…the 23rd NY have throwed up a heavy breast work and mounted large pieces of artillery. A large army…will cross the Potomac , a small force is on this side and their pickets have been seen within a few miles of our camp…when we went into Va we went over the Long Bridge and then due west 45 miles. On accompany has been out today to cut trees to make a battery……they have high breast works and heavy guns mounted. There is no fear of the rebels coming that way…". VG
