A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Ezra Greene, Co. H, 2nd Rhode Island Vols., on patriotic stationery of the US Capitol, "Camp Slocum, Washington, Sept. 14, 1861", in part: "…one more battle will settle this affair. One Mississippi regt has thrown down their arms and gone home. North Carolina has called in her troops and raised the stars and stripes…I went to the funeral of Samuel P. Sweet of Company H down to the barracks…Governor Sprague was here this week but did not stay long. Our fort is most finished…there is some talk of building another and a masked battery…Lieut. [John P.] Shaw [KIA Spotsylvania, May 12, 1864] is in the city much of the time. [2nd Lt. Thomas] Foy is off duty with a pistol ball through his foot…". VG
