A good war-date Union sailor's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Ezra Greene, "U. S. Gun Boat Louisville, Helena, [Ark.], July 3, [1862]", concerning the sinking of the transport U. S. S. Sallie Woods which was destroyed by Confederate artillery fire on July 21, 1862 near Island No. 82 meaning this letter, though dated July 3rd was actually more likely written on August 3, 1863 and reads, in part: "…the fleet left Vicksburg Saturday…this place is called Helena. It is a very pretty place but low and of about 3000 inhabitants. It is on the right side of the [Miss.] in Arkansas. There is soldiers along here for 3 miles. We can see the whole length of their line of tents and baggage trains. The rebels took 3 of our transports…they took the valuables and burned the boats. We saw the wreck of one as we were coming up the river. Her name was Sallie Wood. The other was the Lady Pike, both were taken near Napoleon a place we ought to have pillaged and burned. It is a small place in Arkansas of about 1000…Old boatmen say it is nothing but a den for cut throats and robbers…since we left Memphis we are used worse than slaves of the South…". VG
