A good war-date Union sailor's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Ezra Greene, "U. S. Gun Boat Louisville, Blockading Fleet near Vicksburg, July 13, [1862]", in part: "…I have been carpentering for the 1st Lieutenant during the past week…I have been at work…hewing off the barricade in front of the boilers to be ready for the iron plate. The night of the Fourth there was a splendid display of fire works about 9 the different gunboats and sloops of war fired rockets, from 11 till 12 the lower Mortars kept up a continuous fire…into the rebel batteries and the city of Vicksburg. I was looking out of a port hole and saw 5 shell in the air at one time. It was a splendid sight to see the burning fuse of one shell chase that of another and taking a direct line for the rebel strong hold [with] nearly every one we could see burst in the air…the morning of the 4th our 13 inch mortars saluted them with 100 shell. The whole course of these shell can be seen in the night…I am heartily sick of the service…we get report[s of] men being promoted…I think [they] are traitors…McDowell is one, all he wants is to fill his pockets. Fremont has resigned…he was working for the country, not his pockets. McClellan his enemies are without number because he uses his own judgement. If I was out of service…I would not enlist under any consideration…". VG
