A good war-date Union sailor's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Ezra Greene, "Helena, Arkansas, July19, 1862", in part: "…the Benton went down the White River. Our boat attempted to go up the river. We went up about 4 miles [and] got aground…we got back to Helena in 4 days…the crew is nearly all sick. One of the ward room boys died last night…I am very weak from the diarrhea…almost everyone on board has it…it is caused by drinking the muddy water…I wish we were in Memphis and had the liberty…". VG
