A good war-date Northern home front letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by a certain "A. E. Smith", Saratoga, Minn., Dec. 14, 1862 to Ezra Greene, reading, in part: "…the Gideon's were well, wrote last from 'Brooks Station'…James Rhodes you remember him…has been made a second Lieut. [James Pelham Rhodes Battery A, 1st Rhode Island Light Artillery]. Frank Brayton ditto of a Conn. Regt. [21st Conn. Vols, WIA Drewry's Bluff, Va., May 15, 1864.] Lydia saw George Slocum in town with an officer's coat, sword and so on. He was promoted to the same office in the 4th Regt and wounded by a shell at the battle of Antietam, taken prisoner three days and two nights without food…John Lansing…has been captured by the guerrillas who stripped him of everything…have just came home from church-shook hands with a soldier for his sake and others…far away…the good times will never be forgotten, old friends are always remembered…what think you of Burnside that he will accomplish what McClellan has failed to? I am discouraged about the war prospects…please write soon to your Minnesota friends who often think of the soldiers in Mound City Hospital…". VG
