A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Robert H. Crist (1829-1912), Co. F, 21st Indiana Vols., [later captain 1st Ind. Hvy. Artillery], Camp Dix, Baltimore, Sept. 20, 1861, in part: "…every two months privates recd $20 in Treasury notes, $2 in gold, .18 in silver and .01 in copper making $22.19…a captain, 18 others and myself escorted Marshall Kane of Baltimore notoriety, Col. Dawson of Virginia and Colonel Pegram of Southern Chivalry with 26 others to New York last week. Kane, Dawson and two others we left at Fort Lafayette…in the Narrows and the rest we left on Governor's Island, close to the Battery…we remained nearly 24 hours on the Island…I wish Beauregard would try to take it. I saw several small rifle cannon that shoot 7 miles…I saw 700 prisoners from Hatteras, North Carolina. They are in Castle Williams on the Island. They are a hard looking set. The ones we took were well dressed…we came to Philadelphia [and] had our supper at the Soldier's Retreat, a large building…to feed about 600…every thing was in apple pie order…quaker girls to wait on us and lots of good old Quaker Ladies looking on…they were very kind and sociable, furnished us writing room, pen, ink, paper and prepaid envelopes…". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Near fine.
