A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 2 1/3pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Robert H. Crist (1829-1912), Co. F, 21st Indiana Vols., [later captain 1st Ind. Hvy. Artillery], "Ship Island, Miss, C. S. A., April 2, 1862", in part: "…one or two Regts have gone on board the transports. What our destination is we know not…we heard that the Merrimac went down to Newport News…after we left and raised h[?] with those gunboats…it is well we left…Manassas…is evacuated. We heard by the way of Secesh that the Federals are coming down the river. There are troops arriving every few days. There are some 15,000 troops here now…the mortar fleet left here some days ago…Genl. B. F. Butler is here…there were 2 or 3 ladies from the main land to claim some property that one of our gunboats has captured on a schooner. A foraging party went out a few days ago on Horne Island and captured some (beef) cattle…there are some 30 or 40 wooden buildings put up here…". The original transmittal cover is included. Near fine.
