A good war-date Union soldier's 4pp. 4to., letter written by Pvt. Oscar L. Whitelaw, Co. K, 15th Vermont, "Camp Randall near Union Mills, 7 miles west from Fairfax Station, Va., Dec. 2, 1862", in part: "…we have left camp Vermont…the 13, 14, 15 Regts. had orders…to be ready to march within an hour…we started with 2 days rations. Dr. Bullard & myself were chosen to go. We had 2 ambulances which were soon full of fellows…the men could hardly keep their eyes open. We came to Alexandria & took the same turnpike the 1st Vt. Brigade came down on when you were out on last spring…we started for [Fairfax] C. House…it is a dirty little place…filled with camp equipage & mule teams…next day we came to Union Mills situated on Bull Run Creek. We are not far from the celebrated Manassas Battlefield. The men are continually picking up guns, swords, cartridge balls etc & what looks worst skulls & other human bones. The Regt is doing picket duty & guarding the R. R. [and] shall probably go back soon as they do not wish to divide the brigade. We are clear in front but…the rebels are occupied…at Fredericksburg & Richmond preparing for Burnside…he will drive them right along…Dr's. [Carlton P.] Frost & B. [Gates B. Bullard] are both well & liked well. They make a good team. Mr. Cummings [Chaplain Ephraim C.] does his whole duty…he is right around among the men [&] visits the hospital at least twice a day…last Sunday he went…out to the picket & held a meeting. The night we started he came on with us in the rain said he 'wanted to see what was up'…I have a good deal of faith in Burnside & think the army generally does…". Near fine.
