War-date Union soldier's letter signed "Your aff. Bro Frank," 4pp., 8vo, from "Banks of the Chicahominy, VA," June 8, 1862, n.p., probably Massachusetts, reading, in part,"…I start tomorrow for Fortress Monroe and thence to Washington. I have hope I should have been better but I am not…All is quiet here excepting of course such preparations being made as will soon grant us our dearest wish: the fall of Richmond…It is extensively believed here that Gen. Joe Johnston is dead killed on Saturday the 31st but I think it is a mistake - wounded he may be but I think not dead. The information comes from rebel prisoners…I am glad to have observed one thin g - that is a tendency on the part of the rebels to treat our dead and wounded better than formerly I heard of but one case where a Colonel was shot as he fell bayoneted…Many of the prisoners are anxious for the war to close - some gross exceptions (would) rather die than ever be helped by a d____d yankee…I only hope that the Abolitionists will let our army alone…Mass was for the Union not the 'immortal nigger" but the union one and inseparable…" Uniform fading, else clean and sound. Fine condition.
