A good Union soldier’s etter igned, “R.A. Fulton” Lt. Col, 53rd Ohio Infantry, 3p. quarto, Memphis, Tennesse, October 29, 1862, with cover , it reads in part: “...we have Brigade Drill 3 times a week and one Review...I have also duties to perfrom as Brigade and Division Officer of the day which last generally occupies the greater part of the night in visiting our outward pickets and requires a ride of 12 or 15 miles but I now have an escort of 10 or 12 men as Guards...the enemy have Guerilla bands in the neighborhood and they may lay in ambush when the Officer has to pass and fire upon his party and retreat under cover of the darkness...there was a force of from 1000 to 2000 cavalry within 9 miles of us...sent out to burn cotton and prevent the citizens from trading with Memphis, as they do not permit any cotton be sold but burn every bale they can belonging to their own citizens, for fear they will sell it for cash verly the liberty of the Poor White Trash in the South does not amount to much, this a beautiful country and there are some of the most beautiful residences here that I ever saw...Mrs. Gen. Sherman is here...had an introduction and conversed with her some time and she was very polite and affable and paid me particular attention...” More. VG.
