A nice Union soldier's letters written by Pvt. David F. Ferris, Co. E, 44th New York (Ellsworth Avengers), "12/23/62 Camp near Fredericksburg", reading, in part: "…since our excursion to Fredericksburg the camp has presented a busy scene...George McBlain a member of our Co. who had his leg broke by a ball at the battle of Fredericksburg is getting along as fast as could be expected; he is quartered near here in a private house, used for a hospital. I see by some of the papers, the battle of Fredericksburg is considered a great Union disaster and defeat. I do not see why it should be thus considered. It is time Burnside did not dislodge the Rebels from around Fredericksburg; but he stormed and took the city, and drove the enemy from several of his strong positions. Besides every foot of ground he took remained in his possession two days, and could have held it until doomsday if necessary. I see no reason why northern journals should pretend to be so well posted on what they know nothing about...We do not know why Burnside gave up storming Fredericksburg Heights, and evacuated the city; but I for one believe he id so not in the light of a defeat but because he had accomplished on great thing, viz: He had concentrated the Rebel Army at a point where they could do the least harm to our interests, and that was what he wished to do...".
