A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 6pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Herbert George Bond (1846-1928), Co. I, 16th Vermont (Vermont Militiaman during the St. Albans Raid and doorkeeper of the US Senate Chamber, Washington, D. C.), "Camp Vermont near Alexandria, Nov. 6, 1862", in part: "…when we first camped we was about a mile from the [he draws a view of the Capitol building here]. We could see the Potomac a little way from our camp. We marched down through the city and across the Potomac and out into Virginia…it looks…of dry sandy swamp land and a part of it covered with bushes…we are in Casey's division. The 12, 13, 14 15 [and] 16 are encamped…close by. They are firing pretty heavy guns jet now…one of the company came along [and] wants to know whare in hell that firing is. That is the way they talk. It is over in one of the forts…we are about 18 miles from Washington…Fort Lyon [is] a little ways from here…17 out of each company…go over near fort Lyon building a fort…we have not changed guns yet although we have had many promises…when we marched Kit Haskings went…he was lieutenant of the rear guard…to pick up stragglers…he said it was great stout tough men instead they would fall out and sit down and pull of their boots and complain of their feet…".
