A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 7pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Herbert George Bond (1846-1928), Co. I, 16th Vermont (Vermont Militiaman during the St. Albans Raid and doorkeeper of the US Senate Chamber, Washington, D. C.), "Camp Vermont [near Alexandria], Nov. 19, 1862", in part: "…we have a dog in our company. I worked on the fort yesterday…the 14[th Vermont] over on the hill are building log houses. They all feel pretty well now since Burnside has taken command…we went to Fort Lyon…it mounts 70 guns. The 34th Massachusetts is close by…I tell you when 10 men out of every co[mpany]…get out ion the woods. The trees have to fall [and] a fellow has to look out for himself or he will get thumped…we heard theta Bush deserted. If he has he is here but he is sick…we have had…orders on dress parade…to be ready to march to Fort Albany for review…if we go at all it is to reinforce some army. We are to carry 100 rounds of cartridges…". VG
