A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Herbert George Bond (1846-1928), Co. I, 16th Vermont (Vermont Militiaman during the St. Albans Raid and doorkeeper of the US Senate Chamber, Washington, D. C.), "Camp near Fairfax Court House, Dec. 30, 1862", to his brother, in part: "…yesterday Geo. Ellis was down to FairFax Court House on guard. The Rebs come near surrounding us. They come and took Bark's Station and tore up about 1/2 mile of track. The 12, 13, 14 ware formed behind breastworks near the big cityFairfax with one battery but 2 guns…they sent over to the station to support the 16. Fairfax station is about 4 miles from Fairfax Court House…they also burnt about 4 rods long…our men…sent 5 or 6 shells in amongst them to see if they could get an answer. Our men shot at some cavalry and they killed a horse then brought in a saddle…carbine, saber & canteen and in the morning a man come and told them thare was a [reb] in his barn…our men went and took him. They also took another one besides. The cavalry…came in from Centreville and all of their trains…they thought they would be attacked…the horses were a running most all night a carrying messages & General Stoughton was out with his men…the sutlers packed up all of their things…we boys did not care much about it…I guarded a prison and all kinds of quartermaster stores in the great court House…it is a building about 60 feet long by 25 or 30 wide with a cupola on top…this war…will never be settled by fighting…the governors of Massachusetts and New York have said that they should not call for eny more men and they say that this most be stopped if they have to call their men home…".
