I, 16th Vermont (Vermont Militiaman during the St. Albans Raid and doorkeeper of the US Senate Chamber, Washington, D. C.), "Camp near Fairfax Court House, [mid January], 1863", to his brother, in part: "…out time is half out the 18 of this month…we will be home by the 4 of July [they would fight their great battle on July 3, 1863 at Gettysburg]…the garibaldi Guards relieved us. They say we are not aging to do picket duty any more…one of our men shot at a stomp the night I was on [picket.] He thought it was a man. It was across Bull Run. One of the cavalry rode across and found out it was a stump. We have been on inspection…". VG
