A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Herbert George Bond (1846-1928), Co. I, 16th Vermont (Vermont Militiaman during the St. Albans Raid and doorkeeper of the US Senate Chamber, Washington, D. C.), Centreville, [Va.], January 4, 1863, in part: "…it is a rough looking country here, war has done it. All that is left here for a home is a house & barn and door yard fence. You can't see a fence anywhere else but round the house…January 5th…I am now out on the picket line…we are in the vicinity of Bull Run. The land is level and we are posted about a quarter mile apart. We have got a good fire. Ashel is off picking up old gun barrels-thare has been guns burnt here some time. Thare is all sorts of old iron…my boots ware first rate being ironed and nailed. I have just bought…some rebel pants. Their pants are made of sail cloth [and are] white…". The original transmittal cover is included. VG
