A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Herbert George Bond (1846-1928), Co. I, 16th Vermont (Vermont Militiaman during the St. Albans Raid and doorkeeper of the US Senate Chamber, Washington, D. C.), Fairfax Station, [Va.], Feb. 11, 1863, in part: "…we…drill only in bayonet exercises and shooting at target which is fun. We shoot 8 & 10 rounds a day…yesterday I went on fatigue down to the station. We picked up tents which Slocum's division left…and put up a sutler's tent. We made him treat after we got it up. Gen. Stoughton came down thare and [?] the guards at last. He got one mans gun and then he took him and tided him up to a tree because he let him have it…I have not seen a white lady [but]…2 or 3 since I came to Virginia [and] them was the Col's wives…I had my picture taken but it is not good for any thing…the man [photographer] wanted to know if I wanted the ring gilted and I told him yes so he put it on (the yellow spat) on my vest [which] was a blanket button…".
