A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 3 1/2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Thomas Landers, Co. D, 16th Mass. Vols., Alexandria, Va., Oct. 20, 1862, in part: "…we have to go on picket twice a week and work on the rifle pits…Frank Gallagher [MWIA Spotsylvania, May 12, 64] is in the third Vermont…I saw him the day after the battle of Bulls' Run. I have not seen him since…I saw Henry Hildreth at the battle field [of Second Bull Run] the first day. It was the evening our brigade had just got drove out of the woods…I was sitting on a little hill when he passed. His horse almost stepped on me…he did not notice me. I could not tell what rank he held for he had no shoulder straps on…we have got no priest here…there is one that belongs to the thirty seventh [Irish Rifles] New York. His name is Father Scully…". VG
