A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Thomas Landers, Co. D, 16th Mass. Vols., Rappahannock River, Aug. 16, 1863, in part: "…we are in camp on the Rappahannock river at Beverly Ford. The rest of our army are strung all along the river down to Falmouth. We have got new clothes…we expect a lot of those conscripts…soon…Andrew [who was WIA Second Bull Run]…is getting along very well. He is in the U. S. A. hospital Newton University, Baltimore…let me know what regts the two Flynns are in…they are having such a damn fine time of it. If he is out here with us and begin to blow about enlisting again he would get knocked down before he could get it out of his mouth…there is just as good Union men here as Pat Flynn ever dared to be…I know a man that sees one good hard battle and gets out of it safe [and] never wants to get into another…any man that says contrary to that…is telling a god damn lie…the draft will begin there pretty soon. When it does…send me a list of the names…I think you had better get into the cavalry…before the infantry…you can keep clean and save long marches and keep out of the mud and wont have to carry such heavy loads…".
