A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Sgt. Thomas H. Mason, Co. I, 56th New York (Tenth Legion), n. d., n. p., [but Meridian Hill, Alexandria, Va., ca. January, 1862], in part: "…I started from Ellenville on Monday and got into Washington on Tuesday…my tent mates told me that I was reported absent with [out] leave so I went before the major and reported myself and so ended the matter…I was ordered to put on my knapsack for general inspection…I was put on as sergeant of the guard…it being New Year. We are now in barracks…that building is divided into five parts, one for the captain three for privates and one for commissary of the company…I have charge of one of the rooms about thirty six in my room and [what] wild Devils they are, but still I conquer them…".
