A good war-date Union soldier's battle letter, 4 1/4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. William Reese [DOD, Aug. 25, 62], Co. B, 103rd Penn. Vols., "[Camp near the James River, Va.], July 6, [1862]", in part: "…on Monday our men were attacked about 2 miles from where we were. The doctor gave orders for all that could walk to start for the James river. Our men were going in that direction and the rebels were following them close…I tried to got taken on the boat with the sick but they were to much crowded with wounded…there has been some great battles fought last week. [Samuel W.] Blacks regiment [the 62nd Penn. Vols.] has been cut up pretty bad their colonel has been killed [GSW to the head, Gaines' Mill, Va., June 27, 62] which was a great loss. Our company was near taken prisoners. The rebel cavalry came on them suddenly but the company got off safe. They had to cross the Chichahominy river…I should have been taken prisoner…I had a dull 4th of July…". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG
