A great group of three (3) Union general order documents issued between July and September 1863 ordering the execution of Captain Bernard J. McMahon 71st Pennsylvania Vols. who shot and killed fellow officer Captain Andrew McManus of the 69th Pennsylvania on May 27, 1863. The first is 2pp. 8vo., "Head-Quarters, Army of the Potomac, Camp near Berlin, Md., July 16, 1863", reads, in part: "the said Captain Bernard J. McMahon, did on…May 27, 1863, shoot Captain Andrew McManus…thereby causing his death…to the specification-Guilty…therefore…Captain Bernard J. McMahon…[is] to be shot to death with musketry…". Also, Pvt. Earl C. Crippen of the 73rd Ohio is also sentenced to executed for desertion. The second two documents pardon Captain Bernard McMahon from execution and read, in part: "…the President of the United States. In consideration of all the circumstances…the gallant conduct of the accused, while a prisoner, in the recent battles at Gettysburg…the President is pleased to pardon Captain McMahon…". Overall VG with light staining.
