A good war-date Union officer's, 3pp. 8vo., letter written by Capt. David E. Welch, 2nd Ohio Cavalry, Frankford, Ky., July 30, 1863, mentioning his company's heavy loss in the battle of Richmond, Kentucky on July 28 and on going to the funeral of statesman John J. Crittenden, in part: "…on Monday my company was all cut up at Richmond, Ky. They were all dearly loved by me more so than any other set of men that I expect to have command of while I continue in the service of the U. S. I came here to attend the funeral of Hon. John J. Critenden who was buried yesterday…to Lexington this noon where I have been detailed on court martial and shall probably to detained there some time as we have many cases to try, and serious ones too…".
