Music Sheet, “Dan Bryant’s Popular Comic Song How Are Your Green-backs!", by E. Bowers, New York, 1863, 6pp., VG. Several greenbacks are printed on the cover. The seven sarcastic stanzas throw insults on the Government and Father Abe. The term greenback refers to paper currency (printed in green on one side) issued by the United States during the American Civil War. They were legal tender by law, but were not backed by gold or silver, only the credibility of the U.S. government. In late 1862, it took $135 greenbacks to buy $100 in gold.
