A good Irish Brigade soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. William A. Smith, Co., D, 116th Penn. Vols., "Camp near Stevensburg, [Va.], March 18, 1864", in part: "…we have got some new recruits in the Regt…68 men and two lieutenants and one captain has come out all together…yesterday…the 69th Regt. P. Vols. celebrated St. Patrick's Day by having horse racing and pig chace and climb[ing] the Greece pole, boxing and drunken whiskey to drown St. Patrick or to stir up Old Shelley…one of the 116th Regt caught the Greece Pig and fitch it home…the day broke up having a big supper over at Division head quarters and all the officers getting drunk and making a regular muss…to wind it up the boys are getting drunk and a good many are under arrest…I seen 4 Rebs that the cavalry fetch in today off the picket lines…".
