A good war-date Union soldier's battle letter 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Frank Ashley, Co. H, 64th Ohio, "Camp on field, June 13, 1864," in part: "…you spoke about the post master rather discouraging any one from sending letters. He was misinformed…the mail has come through regular…it has been 4 days since the skirmishing began here. There has been but little fighting [other] than picket fighting. They have themselves fortified on a hill or what is called Lost Mountain. We have 2 lines of works in our front. I have not seen a man that was killed and only too wounded both from our Regt, one from Co. K and one from H, Jackson Cummins…it [was] very slight, the ball struck the belt plate which saved him. I suppose you have nice weather…there [is] but little sickness of any kind expecting one kind, Minnie fever caused by n ounce of lead. Things are moving on as well as can be expected. The rail road is in running order up to our lines and has been for 2 days…". VG
