A great war-date Union soldier's battle letter 3pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Frank Ashley, Co. H, 64th Ohio, "Camp near Marietta, Ga., July 1, 1864," concerning the battle of Kennesaw Mountain on June 27th, in part: "…we have been having some warm times since I wrote to you. Our division and a part of [Jefferson C.] Davis' division made a charge but was repulsed with considerable loss [and] had a warm time for a few minutes. The bullets came rather think for me but I laid close to the works which saved my bacon, had one man killed and 4 or 5 wounded in our Regt. Brigadier Gen. Harker was killed [he was] commander of our brigade. Capt. Williams of the 65th O. V. I was killed. He was acting major of the regt. The lieut. Colonel Whitbeck was wounded. There was another colonel killed besides a great many privates too numerous to mention…there is no picket firing at present. The boys…on picket traded coffee for tobacco and change[d] papers…this morning a corporal of the rebs came out and wanted a corporal to rasel (wrestle) and said that he would show the yanks what the rebs could do. The reb was gratified by a corporal…the yank was too much for him. The reb was throwed over the yank's head and was told that would be the way they would all be served…we have to move our camp in rear line of breastworks in a few minutes…we have very little opportunity of spending money for we have no sutlers…". VG to near fine.
