A fine war-date Union soldier's letter 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Frank Ashley, Co. H, 64th Ohio, "Camp of the 64 near Atlanta, Ga., Sept. 9, 1864," in part: "…[we] have had a hard march…we came back last night to Atlanta…we will go back back along the railroad towards Marrietta to guard the road…you have heard of Sherman's retreat. It…fooled the rebs. They thought that we had fell back across the Chattahoochie river…it didn't last long for they had to fall back to save their bacon. The army moved to the right, one corps at a time…it was not long till we were near the railroad some 20 miles south of this place. Also destroyed about 12 miles of the road…the army cut into part of it at Atlanta…the rebs destroyed all they had left. They burned 3 trains of cars loaded with ammunition also burned the rolling mill…if the Cops [Copperheads] want to resist the draft. They will have a good time of it for Sherman has troops enough to send up north…while we was on the march we could not get or mail…we was 30 miles south of Atlanta and the rebs in the city…". VG
