A fine war-date Union soldier's letter 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Frank Ashley, Co. H, 64th Ohio, "Camp of the 64 near Atlanta, Ga., Sept. 18, 1864," in part: "…I would like to be with you to help you eat some of those good apples for they are better then our folks raise here. I raised some the other day but 2 men [were] not so licky…they had to go down South for their impudence. They were taken about half hour after I left. [They] were got in a cornfield…it is better to be born lucky than rich. I have been so since I have been in the army…". VG
