A fine war-date Union soldier's letter 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Frank Ashley, Co. H, 64th Ohio, "Camp of the 64 Whiteside, Tenn., Oct. 16, 1864," in part: "…I have been on a short tramp to Bridgeport…after a team but had to dig it out of the mud…the rebel army is near Chattanooga but we have force enough to meet him. There has been about 20 trains loaded with soldiers passed here for that place…we will have to pull out soon…the brigade that was supposed to relieve us passed last night…we have done our part…W. T. Sherman is close after Hood…Hood will be in a tight place soon…we can not see as far as W. T. can. He knows what he is about far better than we do. He left them come around him and then comes along behind…it will be much to the displeasure of Hood…it is rather doubtful we [will] stay here very long. We had orders to move yesterday but did not for some cause…". VG
